The Protecting Victoria's Vulnerable Children Inquiry by the Victorian Government - known as the Cummins Report after its Chair Philip Cummins - provided a comprehensive overview of the contemporary Child Protection and out-of-home Care sectors. It made a range of recommendations that led to the development of new services, including the Bounce Project

National Library Oral Histories

More than 200 interviews with Australian survivors of institutional out-of-home Care by the National Library of Australia, between 2009 and 2012. Recordings and transcripts are available either online or by visiting the library in Canberra.



The Care Leavers' Australasia Network (CLAN) was founded in July 2000, a membership organisation for people who grew up in Institutional Care.

The Alliance for Forgotten Australians produced an information booklet aimed at informing and educating government and community agencies and other professionals about the needs of people who spent their childhood in institutional Care.

Colonisation / European invasion

Before British colonisation there were hundreds of Aboriginal nations living in cultures of rich tradition which did not produce the so-called 'unwanted', 'friendless' or 'dangerous' children who European society opted to place in institutions and other placements apart from their families and loved ones.
