SNYPIC
The New South Wales (NSW) State Network of Young People in Care, known as SNYPIC, was auspiced by the Association of Children’s Welfare Agencies (ACWA) and funded modestly by government, following a recommendation of the 1992 "Review of Substitute Care Services in NSW" (Usher Report). It was the first of several state and territory-based networks that would soon form into the Australian Association of Children and Young People in Care (AAYPIC), and eventually in 1999 into the CREATE Foundation.
CREATE Foundation
The CREATE Foundation was established in March 1999 following a meeting in Brisbane of the Australian Association of Young People in Care (AAYPIC). It is a leading participatory organisation for young people in out-of-home care, providing platforms and opportunities for advocacy and activism.
AAYPIC
The Australian Association of Children and Young People in Care (AAYPIC) was established to give people a say in the out-of-home care systems that they were part of. It was initially made up of a number of different state and territory groups from around Australia, and in March 1999 these AAYPIC networks formed a single organisation called CREATE.
Voice of a Survivor
The Voice of a Survivor is a private company that helps victims of institutional abuse to find justice. It does this primarily through legal support, but also through social and political activism. It was founded in 2017 by Russell Manser, a survivor of institutional abuse. The Voice of a Survivor was featured in a report on the 7.30 program on ABC TV in February 2023.
knowmore
knowmore is a legal advice service for survivors of sexual abuse. It was established in 2013 to support people who were giving information to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. It has offices all over in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin, and provides services around Australia.
Open Place (Vic)
Open Place is a support and advocacy service for survivors of institutional placements in Victoria. It was established and funded by the Victorian Government as one of its commitments after its formal apology to Victorian Forgotten Australians in 2006. Initially funding was provided to the community sector organisation Berry Street to manage Open Place. In July 2020 Relationships Australia Victoria became the provider of Open Place.
Australian Orphanage Museum
Care Leavers Australasia Network (CLAN) manages and operates the Australian Orphanage Museum in Geelong, Victoria. It opened on 1 April 2023.
AFA
The Alliance for Forgotten Australians aims to promote recognition for people who experienced institutional or other out-of-home care as children and young people. The organisation takes its name from the 2004 Forgotten Australians Senate Report.
NTSGAC (NT)
The Northern Territory Stolen Generations Aboriginal Corporation (NTSGAC) was established to provide support, services, information and advocacy for Stolen Generations and their families in the NT. It provides direct support for Stolen Generations and their families, inter-generational healing and identity strengthening activities, information about national issues for individuals, and monitors the implementation of the Bringing Them Home Report. NTSGAC is part of the National Link Up Network.
The Native Union (WA)
The Native Union was formed by Aboriginal activists in WA, led by William Harris. Its aim was “to secure equality for Aborigines in all spheres of West Australian cultural and social life”, through the establishment of cultural centres with educational facilities in metropolitan and country areas.
